While the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris may be over, Netflix is not quite done with the City of Lights just yet. The streaming giant is ushering in August with the season 4 release of their ode to fashion show, Emily in Paris. Actress Lily Collins will be bringing all the bright and bold looks to your screens, along with her character’s previous relationship drama. And while there are some truly ringarde looks in this show, there is some fashion advice still to be gleaned. In the wake of incoming French couture, we have curated some of our favorite looks from stripes to classic black, as well as our take on the show’s tacky relationship drama.
Bangs
While the show may have dubbed them “trauma bangs,” we cannot get over the way Lily Collins brings back this classic with effortless flair.
Stripes and More Stripes, If I Might
As Lily Collins’ character has continued to adapt to French life, so have her outfits. Dialing it back slightly to a more chic fit, this season is sliding out of summer with classic stripes. After all, a red and white blazer coupled with the perfect red lip screams patriotic in all the right ways.
Oversized Coats and Cozy Sweaters
Where are all my Fall and Winter gals at? We cannot get over this fuzzy petty coat paired with a matching bag, emerald gloves and a classic black cap. And there is no way to go without mentioning Sylvie’s (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) chocolate brown coat and tortoise shell shades.
Black and White
And last but not least, you can elevate any look with classic white and black. Be it mom jean shorts or a formal dinner, this classic pairing screams French and fabulous!
What the show makes up for in looks, it definitely lacks in relationship tact. This season promises to carry forward Emily (Lily Collins) inability to choose one man and commit, a dilemma simply reflective of the cultural tune that “you can have it all.” But will this bit continue, or will the show opt for the less than helpful message of self-love and self-affirmation, leaving Emily (Collins) choosing herself in the end. It’s also impossible to ignore the vulgarity and sexually explicit content, which is on par for Hollywood and French culture.
Bonne Nouvelle
While the show promotes a toxic view of relationships, cross dressing, and homosexual relationships, one should expect no less from a show shaped by and created for our current culture. Remember that fashion will fade and culture will continue to decline, but our God is unwavering. He is not surprised by or moved by the ever changing tide of the media. Thus we must press on with unwavering faith towards that which is lasting.
1 John 2:15-17
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions–is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
